3-D Printing in the Classroom

I believe that 3-D printing is a great way to include technology in the classroom. However, I also believe that for Music Educators it might be hard to come up with a ways to include 3-D printing into a lesson plan.

Most of our day is spent working with instruments or voices. How can we incorporate this into a participation based classroom? Well let's think outside of the box, here are some examples:

Primary School: Use the 3-D printer to make 3-D versions of quarter notes, eight notes, and rests. The students can use these to do a hands-on lesson about rhythms.

Instrumental Classroom: Use the printer to make a trumpet mouth piece or a a flute stand for one of your students to experiment with.

There are ways to incorporate 3-D printing in a classroom, you just have to use your creative mind and think outside of the box.

  1. Where 3D printing has yet to really make a huge impact, but provides an ample amount of opportunity, is within educational institutions. These range from elementary schools to high schools, universities, and maker spaces around the globe. One reason that 3D printing has been quite slow in making its impact in these institutions is simply because of the lack of knowledge of the technology. Therefore, we have learn some basic knowledge in 3D printing technology and will need to update our information or database so that we can bring this piece of technology into schools!!
